"Thriving with Swine: Birendra Chaudhary's Success Story in Pig Raising"

Birendra Chaudhary, a 40-year-old progressive farmer residing in Pipladi village, supports his family consisting of his wife and son through daily agricultural activities. Attending a pig raising training organized by United Vision Nepal in his village proved transformative for him. He acquired skills in feeding, basic treatment, and homemade food preparation for pigs. Facing the challenge of expensive market feed, Birendra opted for homemade feed supplemented with pig feed concentrate, utilizing locally available ingredients like vegetables, wheat bran, rice bran, and kitchen scraps. While primarily reliant on agriculture for income, he also engages in rearing local indigenous pigs without a male for fattening purposes. Through the support of United Vision Nepal, Birendra’s pig pen underwent renovation with cemented walls, and he received pigs for breeding and fattening. His sows conceived naturally, aided by regular visits from scientific personnel who monitored the pigs’ growth and provided necessary supplements like mineral mixtures and pig rations. Maintaining strict cleanliness and sanitation standards on his pig farm, Birendra ensures the animals are protected from infections. Now, with three pigs weighing between 60 to 70 kilos each, he is ready to sell, showcasing the success of his pig-raising venture.
