"Overcoming Odds: Shyama Chaudhary's Journey to Literacy"

My name is Shyama Chaudhary, and I am 46 years old. I live in Baluwaphanta village in Kanchanpur district. I grew up in a joint family, facing the challenges of poverty from a young age. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to attend school. When I was just 9 years old, my parents sent me to work as a child laborer in Dang, at the house of a wealthy family. For eight long years, I stayed at master’s house, cleaning their houses, washing dishes, clothes, and toilets, and caring for their animals. It was a difficult time for me, especially when I would see the privileged children of the family going to school, a sight that often brought tears to my eyes. Eventually, I returned to my hometown of Kanchanpur. Over the years, I got married and now have three children of my own. Recently, United Vision Nepal brought hope into our lives by organizing literacy classes in our village. Eagerly, I embraced the opportunity to learn both Nepali and English alphabets. As the program commenced, I found myself attending classes diligently, soaking in the knowledge with enthusiasm. I have learned alphabets and learning developing words, that is formed by joining words, a concept that was completely unknown to me before. My desire to learn had always burned within me, and now, with the encouragement of my husband and children, I am determined to read and write. Despite my responsibilities as a farmer, juggling work in the fields, household tasks, and animal care, I have managed to make time for my studies. As they say, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” I am immensely grateful for this opportunity that United Vision Nepal has presented upon our community. Their wonderful program has not only opened doors to education but also brought newfound confidence and joy into my life.
